Hall of Fame Catcher Gary Carter Dead at 57

February 17 Feb 2012 | 08:09

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, whose single in the 1986 World Series for the New York Mets, touched off one of the most improbable rallies in baseball, has died today. He was 57. Last May, Carter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, was an 11-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner three times.

Nicknamed “Kid,” Carter played almost two decades with the Mets, Montreal, San Francisco, and then the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the one of the first players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with an Expos cap on his plaque.

In the 1986 game, the Mets were down to their last two outs when Carter stepped up to the plate. No one was on base and New York was trailing the Boston Red Sox 5-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6. Carter said he had only one thought in mind: “I wasn’t going to be the last out of the World Series.” True to his word, he delivered a clean single shot to left field. A few hits later, Bill Buckner’s error allowed the Mets to win the game, 6-5.
