Searching to capture market share, Apple (AAPL: 510.24, +0.78, +0.15%) is purportedly testing a new tablet device that is featuring a smaller screen.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is showing component suppliers in Asia blueprints for a new device with a screen size of approximately 8 inches, compared with the 9.7-inch screen that the iPad 2 has.
The shrunken tablet will have a similar screen resolution as the iPad 2, the paper reported. Apple is working with a number of screen makers, which includes South Korea’s LG Display (LPL: 12.95, -0.22, -1.67%) and Taiwan’s AU Optronics.
It is unclear what the new device would be named.
