Brazil to Take Twitter to Court

February 13 Feb 2012 | 13:48

According to reports, Brazil has become the first country to take Twitter to court, as it has filed an injunction against the social networking giant. The injunction has been filed to stop it from alerting drivers to drunk-driving checkpoints, radar traps and police roadblocks. This will then make the Latin American nation the first country to take up for its announced plans to censor the content at the requests of the government. Last month, Twitter had revealed its plans to censor those special tweets which are in violation of the laws of the home country. On Thursday, Eva Galperin from the Electronic Frontier Foundation based in San Francisco, said in an interview that as far as they know this is the first time ever that a country has taken Twitter to court because of their country specific censorship laws.

Galeprin defined her company as a “digital liberties organization” and predicted that the governments of different countries will be using similar opportunities to censor the traffic on Twitter. She said further, that Twitter has given these governments the tools and Brazil is now the first country to use it. A spokesman for the office of federal prosecutor, Carlos Eduardo Rodrigues Alves, said that on Monday the injunction request was filed.

He said further, that in the next few days a judge was expected to make the announcement whether he will issue orders against the users of Twitter. The office of attorney general said in a statement, that tweeted alerts regarding the operations of police seriously affect the efforts for the reduction of auto accidents and check auto thefts and the smuggling of drugs and weapons.
