Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Reactor Temperatures Exceed Safety Standards
February 13 Feb 2012 | 10:44
On Sunday, Japanese scientists said that the temperature readings at one of the most damaged nuclear reactor’s of last year’s disaster Fukushima, have risen above the country’s severe new safety standard, but there was no immediate danger.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company Incorporated (TEPCO), said that one of three thermometers on the number-two reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant showed steady heating in the month of February and reached 179.6 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday.
The reactor operators said that the temperature was above the 179.6 degree safety standard, but it remains below the 212 degree level that the government says is needed to keep the safe state of cold shutdown.
The authorities of the reactor said that it will check the accuracy of the thermometer in question, as two other thermometers on the same reactor have been measuring its temperature at around 95 degrees.
TEPCO said that the gas samples from the reactor did not show any new serious reaction, and other monitors and data do not recommend heating and increased steam.
A spokesperson from TEPCO told media reporters that they believe the state of cold shutdown is being maintained and the actual temperature is somewhat increasing, but they consider there is option that the thermometer concerned is experiencing a display error.
Local media reported that for a safety measures, TEPCO has increased the level of water and boric acid solution being poured on the reactor to cool it down.
The Fukushima power plant is the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years, after it lost its cooling systems in the March catastrophe and went through meltdowns and explosions.
