Adele made Grammy history on Sunday, victorious in all 6 categories in which she was eligible. This allowed her to tie Beyonce’s 2010 record for most Grammys won by a female artist in 1 night and Eric Clapton’s 1993 record for most Grammys won by a British artist in 1 night. Adele is the youngest artist to sweep the “Big Three” awards-Album, Record and Song of the Year. The twenty-three year old surpassed easily the ex record-holders, Paul Simon, Carole King, and Christopher Cross, each were 29 years old when they achieved the feat.
Adele’s sweep was a no-brainer. In the past year, the singer achieved an exceptional combination of blockbuster sales, critical acclaim and industry support. But that does not mean the 54th annual Grammy Awards did not have its share of surprises.
Chris Brown won Best R&B Album for F.A.M.E. It was Brown’s 1st Grammy, and it came just 3 years after Brown’s heavily publicized beat-down of his then-girlfriend Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammys. The album was a solid hit, particularly with Brown’s core R&B fans, but is is still remarkable how Brown has been able to get his career back on track so rapidly. Fans (and Grammy voters, too) are forgiving. He did not hear any boos when he performed or when he won. In his acceptance speech, Brown was thankful to the Grammys for letting him back on the show, though he did not mention the incident with Rihanna.
