The human rights groups have said on Thursday that the regular army of Libya and a list of independent militias were included in torturing the loyalists of former Libyan dictator Muammer Qadhafi. Many of them have even lost their lives during custody. According to Amnesty International, despite all the sureties and promises made by the new rulers of Libya, they have not made any progress yet to stop torture in their country. In the third largest city of the country, Misrata, the Doctors Without Borders have already halted their work on similar accusations.
A few days ago some reservations were expressed by the United Nations that said that the former militias who had played a critical role in toppling the Qadhafi regime are now more frequently fighting with one another thus posing greater security risk. Amnesty International has said in a statement that in the recent weeks and months many Libyans have died in custody after being exposed to torture which was part of a widespread harassment and torture going on against the pro-Qadhafi loyalists and army men. It added further that its delegates arranged meeting with many detainees in Tripoli, Misrata and as well as small cities like Ghariyan as well, where they had showed visible signs of torture.
It said further that the military and political entities having government recognition, were involved in this torture. In addition to this, the armed militias are also involved, as they are operating beyond any sort of legal framework. A senior adviser at Amnesty International, Donatella Rouvera said that this fact was simply horrifying that no progress has been made for bringing a halt to torture.
