On Tuesday, for the first time the UN health agency, World Health Organization (WHO), intervened in the one of the most escalated global scandals over faulty breast implants, suggesting women with the breast implants seek medical advice if they have any concerns.
Pointing to the French brands implicated in the health controversy, WHO said that women with French company, Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) or M-Implant prostheses, should discuss with their doctor or surgeon if they suspect rupture, or have pain or inflammation or any other concerns.
WHO, on its official website, said that affected people and medical doctors should take note of their national health authority recommendations and act accordingly,.
The media reported that nearly 300,000 women around the world are believed to have received implants made by the French company, Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) but some of the other reports showed that these figures are much higher than 300,000.
In early 2010, the French breast implant manufacturer, PIP silicone implants, were withdrawn from the market of the European Union (EU) following an observed increase in implant ruptures, and the French authorities also confirmed that the company uses substandard silicone in the manufacture of the implants.
Most of the European health regulatory authorities, including France, Germany and the Czech Republic have recommended that women with these implants have the devices removed as a precaution. But the UK has said it will not follow suit because they haven’t see any of the problem related to this.
WHO said that the data about adverse events from the implants was unclear and they hoped for stronger reporting of this case in order to get a clearer picture.
