The market researcher company NPD Group reported that the retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories in the United States drop 21% in last month of 2011 from a year ago to $4 billion.
NPD Group analyst, Anita Frazier said that the results are not completely surprising given that they are at the back end of the current videogame console lifecycle. Frazier added that the December’s poor performance was unexpected given the quality of new videogames including Activision’s blockbuster “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3”, which was the top-selling videogame.
The research company said that American company Microsoft’s videogame console, Xbox 360, will turn seven years old this November, while the Japanese company Sony’s console PlayStation 3 (PS3) will turn six this year and Nintendo’s Wii is also turning six yeasr old this November.
The reports showed that the digital and alternate game sales is on the rise. Retail sales of portable, videogame console and personal computers videogames remain the markets biggest revenue generator despite an annual sales decline.
Frazier said that the last month of the 2011 was very rough for new physical sales of videogame hardware, software and all of its accessories, because of the great line up of content that came to market during the last quarter. Frazier added that she had expected sales of December to represent a larger portion of the videogame industry’s total year sales than what occurred.
The US based research company said that the Microsoft’s console Xbox 360 was the best-selling platform for the year, while the Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 were the only gaming consoles to sell more units than the previous year.
