Mexican Health Official Orders Breast Implant Women Must Get Themselves Checked

Plastic surgeons from Mexico said that women in Mexico with breast implants, made by the French company, PIP, behind a global health scare, should be examined by a doctor.

They said that about 4,500 Mexican women received the French-made breast implants at the center of a scandal over their rupture risks, that were used for last sixteen years with no serious problems reported.

President of the Mexican Association of Plastic Surgery, Alejandro Duarte said that they have calculated that around 4,500 implants of the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) have been inserted, which is their first estimate and they have had no reports of any fatalities, cancer or problems among its users.

Duarte, at a news conference, told media reporters that women with the implants should visit a doctor without panic and they are not going to take the thoughts of other countries like France or Venezuela that fell into panic or hysteria.

He told reporters that if the implants are in a good state, then it is not necessary to remove them, as some of the other European countries have ordered.

In December, the French government advised 30,000 women with the breast implants produced by the now-bankrupt PIP to have them removed following the death from cancer of a French woman who had the implants in 2010.

The PIP company that produced breast implants, was shut down and all of its products banned in April 2010 after it was revealed to have been using non-authorized, poor quality silicone gel that caused unusually high implant rupture rates.

Mexican doctors said that the PIP implants were used between 1994 and February 2010 in Mexico.

According to the French government, nearly 84% of the breast implants made by French company PIP were exported around the world mostly to Latin America states, Spain and UK.
