Eric Schmidt Says Fragmentation of Android is not the Problem

January 12 Jan 2012 | 15:26

Android fragmentation is a topic that appears on the surface quite often, especially with the increasing anticipation over the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices. Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google, has hoped that he would clarify some of the issues revolving around the fragmentation of Android during his presentation at Las Vegas’s Consumer Electronics Show during which he said that fragmentation is negative, while differentiation is positive. He added that differentiation means people are having a choice. The people who are manufacturing the phones are going to compete on the basis of innovation, and they will keep on trying and convince the people that their product is better than those manufactured by others.

The discussion on the issue of fragmentation by Schmidt, has once again brought to limelight a tricky issue, as one of the major goals of the company has been to get the users on the latest version of the platform, ICS. After that he mildly criticizes Apple Inc. for their short-sighted vision regarding the mobile experience, and praises ICS because of the fact that it has a differentiated interface in opposition of the standardization of the iPhone. Schmidt said that it is certainly not required that everyone uses similar interface. He added that people have the freedom to make the necessary changes. Something which is really great is that if someone does not like it then one has the liberty to buy the phone from someone else.

Google is so far lagging behind its goal to get all of its users on the ICS platform, which currently has even less than one per cent of the market.
